This event will be hosted in partnership with Alleycat Acres, who have been coordinating community-run urban farms on underused land throughout South Seattle since 2009.

We kick off with our tour at one of Alleycat Acres’ stewardship sites, then winding our way through the Central District to visit their other community farm sites, including their 26^th + Marion and 24^th + Main sites.  As we go, we’ll discuss the unique organizing and design challenges Alleycat farm coordinators grapple with at each location, and how their work fits into the larger context of the Central District.  At the end of the tour, we will gather at Monica’s Village Place space for lunch and a brief presentation.  After the presentation, the speakers will lead small group discussions to dive deeper into how this project was completed. These small group conversations should leave you with a range of tools and ideas to take with you and apply to your own community-based design projects!

Topics explored: volunteer recruitment, community organizing & resource building, collaborating with diverse landowning entities, and garden design.
